Keeping an Eye on Springtime Lake Levels

City and Prior Lake-Spring Lake Watershed District (PLSLWD) staff continue to monitor the weather and current ground conditions in the watershed above Prior Lake to make sure we are prepared for any potential spring flooding. The recent cold weather and snow has delayed the spring season, but the Prior Lake Outlet Structure continues to function and release water out of the system. The PLSLWD, the organization responsible for managing the lake outlet, says low-flow gate of the outlet structure has been open since March 26. The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Chanhassen released an updated Spring Flood Outlook for our area last week. According to the NWS, “…river levels will rise over much of the area…any further rainfall would increase flood potential.” The forecast for the next few days includes some warmer weather which will reduce the snowpack and cause runoff. City staff will continue to keep an eye on the situation and provide updates.  (Read more...)
